Status report on the second phase implementation and summary of Yuanpei University of medical technology

Yuanpei University of Medical Science and Technology, which with the most complete school of the major health industry departments, is the earliest medical technical college in Taiwan. In recent years, we have continued to aim at exquisite professional medical care, welfare and health-related technology, and industrial management. During the past 56 years, we have cultivated countless medical professionals to guard people’s health in Taiwan. At present, the global epidemic has highlighted the importance of medical professionals. Yuanpei Medical University is very honored to be able to contribute to people’s health in such a precarious environment.

The Ministry of Education’s Higher Education Sprout Project focuses on the four goals of "Implementing Teaching Innovation and Improving Teaching Quality", "Developing School Features", "Improving the Publicity of Higher Education" and "Fulfilling University Social Responsibility". Based on the cultivation of industrial talents, four main-axis plans are proposed:

 

Theme 1, teaching talent cultivation 

Based on a triple helix approach which includes academia, industry and government’s joint effort, experts in long-term care institutions, optometric industry, food and beverage industry, and pharmaceutical and medicine manufacturing industry are invited to provide practice-based micro-credit lectures. The goal is to minimize the gap between academics and industries.

To improve students’ international mobility, renowned scholars and experts in respective professions from home and abroad are invited to deliver speeches in our school. We also encourage students and teachers to go abroad to accumulate practical experience and broaden their horizons. Thus, students’ breadth and depth of learning in different professions can be expanded.

To deepen students’ ability, basic lectures such as calculus, chemistry, and physics are provided to build students’ basic understanding, beneficial to pave their way to take on advanced lectures. Up to 86% of students stated that basic lectures prove to be effective in learning after lessons.

Theme 2, Smart online university

We built a smart medical teaching facility, a medical imaging center, an optometric center, pathological clinical research, and a teaching center. Besides, we brought in MRI equipment, a Wave Analyzer Medica 700 wavefront aberrometer, and professional pathological tissue dissector equipment of the same class as hospitals. Top-notch medical conferences were also held in which participants from Japanese cabinet health tactics officer and acclaimed scholars in the cell therapy profession were invited. Their informative talks are the building blocks of our students’ theoretical concepts and clinical experiences.

We built a smart pet care and beauty laboratory. Received the permit from the Ministry of Labor, we’re the first educational facility that becomes a test center for pet grooming test in Taoyuan, Hsinchu and Miaoli city.

We also created a smart educational management system and a smart recognition device to effectively manage human and educational resources.

This year, we will focus on the setting up of smart wards to integrate students' learning with industry and make students' learning process in a presence way.

Theme 3: Glowing Rays Program

We combine co-learning and career counseling. Counselors are also co-learning teachers. We arrange career counselors, global career development facilitators, counseling psychologists, or social workers for students to receive one-on-one career guidance to be more competitive in the job market. Besides, the livelihood of the aborigines needs more cultural recognition and inclusiveness. In 109, the Aboriginal Resource Center was established to help the aborigines in the school recognize their own culture and provide support in all aspects, hoping that students can complete their studies and get a job.

Theme 4: Health Industry Role-Model

Promote local community service and care, organize food safety volunteers, health service teams, and optometry volunteers to conduct community tour services, and conduct free clinics and community service and care activities in primary and secondary schools and rural areas.

In the past, Yuanpei Medical University focused on the health promotion of community residents, holding many health education lectures, exercise guidance, and vision testing. Last year, the school made a homemade lunch box and sent it to nearby hospitals to cheer up the medical staff fighting for the COVID-19. In 110, we will conduct an innovative model, starting from the five major methods of health management, including diet, living habits, environment, exercise, mental health, etc., combined with existing courses, and teachers will lead students to enter the community to implement them, and assist local economic and local revitalization, fulfill the social responsibility of a medical university.

Feedback from students

In the year 109, Yuanpei Medical University has made great progress in the passing rate of the national certification exam. The passing rate of the national exam for nursing teachers has increased by 14%. This year, teachers and students of relative departments will work together to help students get a National Examination Certificate.

In response to the trend of big data analysis, in 109, we specially strengthened the cultivation of logical reasoning thinking ability. We invited the director of Taiwan Water Company Lin Zhixian to lecture the AI learning process and industry application courses. The speaker shared his learning process of AI, guided students on how to find industry problems on their own, and using AI to find solutions to the problems. He also shared his experience in participating in the Hackathon competition and encourage students to apply what they have learned in computational thinking and programming courses to the surrounding environment and industry. Create a better society together.

Some students were also inspired to participate in the "2020 Sustainability and Innovation Hackathon" and achieved second place and excellent results. Students benefited a lot from the competition. One of the students said: "Through innovative and creative courses, we created a pet bag. From the initial design concept to the final product, we learned in the process, innovating, and changing the product, applying for patents, and selecting materials. These are different learning experiences from the past. Although in this off-campus competition, we only got an acceptable result in the end, it was a good opportunity to increase my experience. I felt that I had benefited a lot. I also found that there are too many excellent people outside! We still have a lot of room for improvement, and finally, we must thank the teacher's guidance and the best partners. Without everyone's unity and cooperation, there would be no current results."

Participating in this type of competition is not only for students to accumulate and gain experience, but also an opportunity to build confidence and a sense of accomplishment. The award-winning student said: "Thank you, teacher, for trusting us and leading us to participate in this competition. Regarding this off-campus competition, we prepared very carefully. Although the ranking was not as good as our expectations, I learned how to really grasp the theme of the competition, so that I can really grasp the heart of the judges! It is better to learn how to report with a great ppt design. For our team to report on stage, I also learned how to hold great composure on stage, the smoothness of the report, and the ability to respond to changes. We are ready to continue to welcome the next competition and improve ourselves-win good results and bonuses.

In the new year, Yuanpei University of medical technology will continue to focus on the improvement of students' abilities, enrich students' academic qualifications, establish a system to help students obtain relevant certificates, and integrate with the job market.
